Some books are easy to explain. Piranesi is not one of them.
Susanna Clarke’s strange, beautiful novel takes place in a seemingly endless house filled with enormous halls, statues, staircases and the ever-present sea. The protagonist, Piranesi, spends his days exploring this extraordinary world, recording its rooms and tides in his journals and gathering food from the sea.
As the story begins, Piranesi believes he knows the house intimately. He also believes that only two people exist in the world: himself and “the Other”, a mysterious man who occasionally visits him.
But gradually, small inconsistencies begin to appear.
A World Unlike Anything Else
The setting is undoubtedly the star of Piranesi. Clarke creates an atmosphere that is difficult to describe without giving too much away. The house feels both magnificent and unsettling, with its endless corridors, weather patterns and hundreds of statues.
There is something almost dreamlike about the descriptions. The house is beautiful, but there is always the sense that something isn’t quite right.
Piranesi’s journals are particularly effective because they reveal his understanding of the world gradually. He is observant, curious and deeply connected to his surroundings. His relationship with the house makes the reader question whether this place is a prison, a sanctuary or something altogether stranger.
Don’t Expect A Conventional Fantasy Novel
Readers approaching Piranesi expecting a traditional fantasy adventure may be surprised. This isn’t a novel packed with battles, elaborate magic systems or a huge cast of characters.
Instead, it is quiet, atmospheric and mysterious.
The pleasure comes from discovering what is happening alongside Piranesi. Information is deliberately revealed slowly, and the book rewards readers who are prepared to simply immerse themselves in its unusual world.
There is also a surprisingly strong emotional core. Beneath the mystery is a story about identity, memory, manipulation and the importance of human connection.
A Book That Stays With You
Perhaps the greatest compliment I can give Piranesi is that it doesn’t feel like many other books. It creates an atmosphere that lingers long after you’ve finished reading.
It is also remarkably short, which makes it an excellent choice for readers looking for something different without committing to a huge novel. Don’t be put off by its unusual premise. Once the story begins to unfold, the mystery becomes increasingly compelling.

Yes — particularly if you enjoy literary fiction, fantasy or books that leave you with plenty to think about afterwards. Piranesi won’t appeal to everyone, but for the right reader it can be an extraordinary experience.
